New leader for Climate Change Ambassadors

Award-winning dairy farmer Fraser McGougan has been appointed chair of the DairyNZ Climate Change Ambassadors. Climate Change Ambassadors are leaders for climate change action on dairy farms. They help communicate the challenges and opportunities dairy farmers face in playing their part to address climate change, alongside the rest of New Zealand. “The 13 ambassadors are leading dairy farmers who run their farms sustainably and profitably, while being committed to reducing on-farm greenhouse gas emissions,” said DairyNZ strategy and investment leader Dr David Burger. “The ambassadors work to raise awareness and mobilise change for the benefit of the environment, farmers and New Zealand.” Mr McGougan (42) from Whakatane said he was looking forward to leading the ambassadors to engage with farmers, communities and decision-makers, and to provide a farmer voice at national level. He has been a Climate Change Ambassador since 2018. “Farmers want to be part of the climate change solution,” said Mr McGougan. “Our role as Climate Change Ambassadors includes helping farmers understand the changes they can make on their farm to reduce emissions and improve water quality, while maintaining or even increasing profitability. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach and small incremental changes on individual farms add up to big changes nationally.” Mr McGougan said now is a critical time in the national conversation about emissions reductions, with the Climate Change Commission announcing draft carbon budgets on how New Zealand can meet its climate change obligations. DairyNZ: Climate Commission lays out challenge

Industry body DairyNZ says the Climate Change Commission’s new report is a welcome acknowledgement of a split gas approach and that methane does not need to reduce to net zero. DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle said the Commission’s science-based approach is ambitious and challenging for all of New Zealand and farming is no exception. Dr Mackle said the Climate Change Commission proposals and underlying assumptions will be closely examined over the next few weeks, in particular the biogenic methane targets and advice on reducing stock numbers. “The short-term 2030 and 2035 methane targets are ambitious, making the next 10-15 years the most important for adapting farm systems and investment in research and development solutions for agriculture,” said Dr Mackle. “As a sector, we are committed to producing sustainable food and remaining the world’s most emissions efficient. So, like every kiwi playing their part in addressing climate change, dairy must play our part too.” Dr Mackle said it is encouraging to see the Commission’s recommendations to Government to focus on R&D and rural broadband as solutions to support agriculture to reduce emissions. “Climate policy is incredibly complex. Alamir bakery is a family owned business in Miramar which has been making authentic Lebanese food since it started out in 1992. The company distributes its hummus, falafel bites, pita bread and chips to supermarkets, restaurants and cafes throughout the country. Commentary from Ali Dia – Managing Director of Alamir Bakery Our parents Jamil and Waafa immigrated to Wellington from Lebanon in 1990 due to the war. I was just 8 months old and at that time my brother would have been two years old. My other two brothers were born in NZ. When my parents first arrived my dad had heaps of different jobs – at one stage he was a driver for the Iranian Embassy and my mother ended up becoming the caterer for the embassy because my father invited some people from the embassy to come for a meal at our house one day and they fell in love with my mother’s hummus and they asked mum to cater all the meetings for 1.5 years. My parents started the business after they were encouraged by the founder of Mexican Corn Chips (who is also Lebanese) to sell our hummus to supermarkets. Our parents started the business in 1992, making small batches of hummus and falafel in a little commercial kitchen at the back of our house in Miramar, Wellington. At this point the “Alamir” name wasn’t born yet – we were still trading as ‘The Delicious Lebanese Snack Co Ltd’, distributing to local Supermarkets, Restaurants and cafes. World missing out on nutrition due to overfishing

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) – an international non-profit on a mission to end overfishing – says the world is missing out on enough protein to meet the yearly needs of 72 million people, because not all fisheries have been sustainably managed . Seafood is a key source of nutrients and protein and plays a vital role in the diets of many people. More than 3.3 billion people around the world get at least 20% of their daily animal protein intake from fish. As the global population continues to rise, the demand for seafood is increasing pressure on this valuable, natural resource. Global consumption of seafood has risen by 122% in the past 30 years. More than a third of global fish populations are now fished beyond sustainable limits, with this trend continuing to worsen4. However, latest estimates suggest that if global fisheries are better managed, 16 million tonnes more seafood could be caught every year, helping to feed a growing world population. The MSC’s analysis shows if globally adopted, sustainable fishing practises would increase the additional protein available to meet the yearly needs of a population more than double that of New Zealand and Australia combined. “The world’s population is set to reach 10 billion by 2050 and food production urgently needs to be made sustainable and equitable, to ensure healthy diets for all,” Anne Gabriel, Oceania Programme Director at the Marine Stewardship Council, says. “Effective management of fisheries allows fish populations and marine ecosystems to recover, in turn increasing the number of fish that can be sustainably caught in perpetuity. “Fish need time to grow and re-produce. Treotham presents igus roller e-chain for targeted irrigation with savings potential

New precision irrigation carriage reduces water and fertiliser consumption by 75% – e-chain in a trough guides hoses with additional energy saving The aim of the precision irrigation carriage from Rathmakers Gartenbautechnik is to use water resources sensibly whilst protecting the groundwater at the same time. With the new automatic irrigation system, the water reaches exactly where it should: directly to the plants. For the safe and compact guidance of hoses and cables, the developers rely on an igus energy chain system consisting of roller chain and guide trough. Water shortage is a major problem worldwide, which is why solutions are needed, especially in agriculture, which bring water in a targeted manner to the plant. For this purpose, Rathmakers Gartenbautechnik has developed a precision irrigation carriage together with Landwirtschaftskammer NRW. Whereas conventional irrigation carriages with a continuous jet stream waste a lot of water, the precision watering carriage irrigates and fertilises in a stipulated way. The unique system is especially suitable for outdoor potted plant cultivation and ensures that water is delivered precisely into the middle of the plant’s growing pot. By using this new technology, savings of 50 to 75 per cent are possible in irrigation water, plant protection and fertiliser, depending on the pot size. This also reduces the nitrogen input into the groundwater. The precision irrigation carriage has a span of 40m and a travel of 208m. The cables and hoses for the water supply were pulled behind the carriages until now. A loop was created, which required about 2m of space between the carriage guide and the plants. DairyNZ supports winter grazing solutions proposed

DairyNZ supports recommendations to the Government from an advisory group looking to improve winter grazing rules for farmers and achieve better environmental outcomes. The Southland Advisory Group was formed after concern from farmers and sector organisations that a number of new winter grazing rules were impractical, challenging to meet and costly for councils to implement. The rules are part of the Government’s National Environmental Standard for Freshwater. “While we support the intent of the Government’s regulations, which is to protect the environment, the rules need to be fair, reasonable and achievable,” said DairyNZ strategy and investment leader Dr David Burger. “We are pleased to have worked with farmers and sector organisations to develop clear and practical recommendations for on-farm wintering actions which will lead to better outcomes for the environment and local communities.” The advisory group is made up of two farmer representatives and representatives from DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Environment Southland, Federated Farmers and Fish and Game. It was formed after farmers expressed their concerns about the regulations, wanting fair and pragmatic solutions. “This collaborative approach is the way forward for developing regional council plans as the National Environmental Standard for Freshwater takes effect over the next few years,” said Dr Burger. “We know farmers have made significant strides in improving their wintering planning and care for the environment and animals, and acknowledge there’s more to do – we are on the journey.” The group is unanimous in its recommendations, which have been presented to the Minister for the Environment David Parker and the Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor. Kiwi tech startup creates export opportunities for food manufacturers

A new freight consolidation service is set to make it easier for Kiwi food retailers to enter export markets and remove the need for intermediaries. In a first for the country, start-up business Jetkrate will offer a small parcel, freight consolidation service which allows consumers to purchase goods from Kiwi businesses and have them shipped to an Auckland address – where they are repacked and sent as one package to any offshore market. The new service aims to replace the daigou (personal shopper) channel which uses personal shoppers to purchase commodities from local retailers and ship them to customers in China as well as reduce the cost of freight for ex-pat Kiwis living overseas. Varun Khetrapal, Jetkrate co-founder, says the daigou channel is inefficient and lacks transparency. “There are two major barriers to Asian consumers shopping directly here for products like Manuka honey, dairy, wine and woollen clothing. “The first is not all NZ retailers ship overseas or if they do, the shipping costs become prohibitively expensive if customers are buying across multiple businesses. “The second is about trust; in the same way New Zealanders might struggle to identify suitable online retailers to buy from in a country they have never visited, Chinese buyers rely on personal shoppers to select a supplier on their behalf. “The new consolidation service removes the shipping barrier and makes it easier to get goods overseas once purchased – that allows the retailer to concentrate on building confidence levels across their customer base. New analysis highlights dairy’s economic contribution

The dairy sector is encouraged by today’s GDP results that emphasise New Zealand’s economic rebound amid Covid-19. The dairy sector is playing a key role in a stable economy, contributing nearly one in every four dollars earned from total goods exports and services in the year to September 2020. Recent Sense Partners analysis, for DairyNZ and DCANZ, shows the sector is delivering $20 billion in export value. “Today’s GDP rebound may be a short-term benefit from the recovery in retail spending, wage subsidy and a hot housing market. So, it is important we don’t forget to focus on export-led growth moving forward,” said DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. “Dairy’s sustained economic contribution is a key factor in the country’s Covid-19 recovery, but tourism will also become increasingly important again as borders open. Importantly, dairy sector growth is supporting wage growth in regional New Zealand. “Dairy provides long-term stability for our communities. Export earnings translate to well-paying jobs, but also support farmers and dairy companies to purchase more than $22.5b worth of goods and services from other industries,” said Dr Mackle. At a community level, in 2019 the dairy sector accounted for more than 5 percent of GDP in seven regions – and more than 10 percent in four of those. West Coast has the greatest GDP from dairy, at 16 percent. “In dollar terms, this equates to dairy contributing more than $100 million to GDP in most regions – including nearly $2 billion in Canterbury and $2.5 billion in Waikato. TAMA announces 2021 Scholarships

The Tractor & Machinery Association Inc (TAMA) is offering to industry trainees who are studying towards a certificate or diploma. There are several $500 scholarships available to industry trainees who can demonstrate their commitment and potential contribution to the industry. Applications for 2021 open on 18 January and close on 5 March with successful applicants advised in May. TAMA general manager Ron Gall said the scholarships are part of TAMA’s wider efforts to encourage younger people to stay working in the industry and take advantage of the valuable career path it offers.
